Vinyamar and Gondolin
Both the Realms of Turgon son of Fingolfin. He came to Middle Earth and set up Vinyamar in Nevrast. Recieving a message from Ulmo, he built the hidden city of Gondolin.

Thargelion
Settled by Caranthir, who grew rich from the trade with the dwarves of Ered Luin. Caranthir settled near Lake Helevorn, and his people fortified the mountains east of Maglor's Gap. Thargelion was overrun by orcs and deserted by the Noldo.

Maglor's Gap
Held by Maglor, second son of Feanor, Maglor's Gap was overrun twice by Orcs and once by Glaurung. It was the most difficult of the northern fences to hold. Maglor settled here when he first came to Middle Earth.

Dorthonion
Aegnor and Angrod settled in Dorthonion on it's northern slopes. They were joined by the First House of the Edain. The land was overrun after Dagor Bragolach and the land was deserted, except for the outlaw band of Barahir.

Stronghold of Sauron, who used it to direct the War of the Elves and Sauron. He returned to it after the downfall of Numenor. After the defeat by the Last Alliance, Mordor was cleansed, but the Nazgul returned while Sauron was in Dol Guldor and prepared Mordor for his return.

Arnor
Founded by Elendil in the last years of the Second Age, Arnor was the great kingdom of Men in the north of Middle-earth. It lay between the Misty Mountains in the east, and the Blue Mountains on the borders of Lindon in the west, and encompassed the area where the Shire would be founded many years later. Its capital, and the seat of its Kings, was at Annúminas on Lake Nenuial.

Originally the Gondorian province of Calenardhon, the land north of the White Mountains was gifted by Steward Cirion to Eorl of the Northmen in 2510 (Third Age). Eorl had led his men through great hardship from the far north to the aid of Gondor, and Cirion gave him the wide green lands of Calenardhon in recognition of his aid, swearing eternal friendship between old Gondor and the new land of Rohan.

Mordor once again fell into the hands of the Enemy, and after two thousand years of relative peace, the Nazgûl returned and claimed the land once again in the name of Sauron. Sauron himself, however, dwelt at Dol Guldur in Mirkwood, and did not himself return openly to Barad-dûr until some seventy years before the War of the Ring.
